Unperturbed by the aftermath of Storm Eowyn the previous day 160 crews took to the River Tyne on Saturday, January 25th as the winter racing season opened with Tyne United New Years Head.
The time trial hosted jointly by Durham University Boat Club took place in bright but cold conditions with a stiff headwind giving competitors an additional challenge.
Durham University Boat Club and local rivals Newcastle University Boat Club led the way in terms of entries with DUBC taking the accolades with 6 victories from 15 entries, while NUBC achieved 5 wins from 22 entries. DUBC winning band 1 of the Open 8+ and bands 1 and 2 of the Women’s 8+.
Durham ARC had wins in 4 events from 7 entries, three being in composite crews.
Pride of place went to Quinn Mosley who took victory in band 1 of the Open single sculls in the afternoon division, 30 seconds ahead of Sunderland’s Chris Webb with Durham’s Nick Baird in 3rd place.
In division 1 in the morning there was a win for Michael Terry in the Durham/Hexham/Tyne ARC composite MasE 4x- who outpaced Talkin Tarn F and Hexham G quads to win the Masters EFG 4x- handicap. The same combination then overcame Sunderland RC and Durham School BC to take their second success of the day in the Open 4x- in division 2.
Four of DARC’s Women’s Masters C squad combined with four from Hexham RC in division 1, holding off Tyne ARC to take victory for the Durham/Hexham composite WMasC 8+.
A close contest in division 2 saw the Hexham Women’s MasC coxless quad taking victory over Durham ARC WMasC 4x by 3 seconds in the WMasCE 4x- event to exact revenge for their 4-second defeat at Rutherford Head.
The DARC MasD coxless four posted a respectable time of 22.11.0 in division 1 although without opposition.
Inclusive of 4 composites Hexham was the most successful club of the day with involvement in 7 victories.
