There was a double success for Durham ARC’s Roger Stainforth at the second British Rowing Virtual Championships (BRVC) on September 11th, sponsored by asensei. Roger entered the Men’s 75-79 2k and 500 metre events, winning against his opponent Patrick Wright of University of London Boat Club on both occasions, posting times of 7.46.6 for the 2k and 1.42.5 in the 500m.
A total of around 1000 entries was received over all events on the day, with competitors using ergos connected online in their own homes. Results, analysis and video of each event have been compiled by Dutch co-sponsor Time Team.
Although the first Virtual Championships held during the lockdown in June 2020 received a fantastic number of entries and the innovative format was hailed a great success, Roger was unable to take part from home due to a technical glitch. However, having overcome this initial hurdle he went on to medal winning performances at BRIC and World Rowing Indoor Championships.
In addition to the Live BRVC on September 11th there was another opportunity for competitors to post their best times in a League whch inclued a larger variety of events and operated between September 3rd and 12th.
A survey conducted by British Rowing in April 2021 indicated sufficient support for a second Virtual Championships in addition to the usual BR Indoor Championships in December. The strength of the indoor rowing community has gained momentum although support from water rowers is likely to fluctuate depending on the likelihood of restrictions being in place.
