Small Grant brings SkiErg World Record

Roger Stainforth’s final preparations for the British Rowing Indoor Championships (BRIC) this weekend included an attempt last Friday on the 80-84 age group World Record for 2000 metres on the Concept2 SkiErg.

Durham ARC acquired a new SkiErg machine and two BikeErgs in October thanks to a successful funding application through the Culture & Sport Small Grants Scheme administered by Sport England to support new projects by providing National Lottery funding to help people play sport and take part in physical activity.

The grant funding combined with the sale of two WattBikes and two old ergos enabled the new training equipment to be acquired at zero cost. The machines are now available in the Club gym for all to use.

Roger has developed an enthusiasm for the SkiErg after taking part in an Ergathlon at the 2022 North East Indoor Championships at Maiden Castle, and duly obliged on November 29th with a time of 8.28.0 on the SkiErg in the DARC gym which breaks the World Record previously held by a Norwegian athlete.

The record was witnessed and has been verified on the Concept2 website at World Records | Concept2 and he has been issued with the certificate shown below.

The investment has yielded rapid and spectacular returns!

Roger is DARC’s sole representative at BRIC and will be competing in the 80-84 Open 2000 metres (at 9.30am) and 500 metres (at 3.53pm) on the RowErg on Saturday, December 7th at the NEC in Birmingham. He set a new 80-84 British Record for 2000 metres on the RowErg in November,.

We wish him every success. Race results will be available on the British Rowing website here on the day of the competition.
