Durham ARC hosted the final round of the 2024 Northern Rowing Long Distance Sculling Series (LDS) on the morning of Saturday, November 2nd, followed by Durham Autumn Small Boats Head (ASBH) in the afternoon. The drizzle that greeted competitors arriving for the LDS race soon dispersed to allow both competitions to enjoy very pleasant conditions.
As has often been the case the likelihood of either competition going ahead was in some doubt as a result of stormy weather in the preceding weeks depositing large amounts of waterborne debris in the river and obstructing the course. Fortunately a team from Durham County Council was able to remove the large trees blocking Elvet Bridge after Storm Ashley before race day.
An entry of 111 representing 13 clubs for the LDS competition included 18 entries from Durham ARC, while the two divisions of the ASBH attracted 199 entries from 22 clubs which included 9 Durham University Colleges. Durham ARC was represented in the ASBH by 20 entries, with Yarm School having the largest contingent of 39.
All divisions ran smoothly with only a few minor issues that were able to be resolved to ensure an enjoyable day for all. Marshalling with bows upstream was repeated and the spacing between crews at the start appeared to work well in avoiding incidents negotiating Elvet Bridge.
Having the largest entry Yarm School was the most successful club taking victory in 18 events during the day. Durham ARC had 13 wins (8 in the LDS and 5 in the ASBH).
Fastest Open crew in the LDS was Durham School BC J18 4x- who completed the 1800 metres between Counts House and the Regatta start line in 6.26.8 and fastest Women’s crew was Yarm School WJ18 4x- in 7.13.6. Fastest Open crew in the ASBH was Hexham RC J18 4x- in 6.10.2 and fastest Women’s crew was Hexham WJ18 4x- in 6.58.4.
Collingwood College Boat Club led the way in the sweep events, winning Open 4+ band 1 in 6.34.8 and Women’s 4+ band 1 in 7.43.6.
The best performance for Durham ARC was Quinn Mosley placing 6th overall in the LDS, winning the J16 single sculling event in 6.54.7 and winning J18 1x band 1 in the ASBH in 7.02.2.
