Hexham Regatta
Seven trailers departed from Durham ARC on the first day of June bound for Hexham Regatta and laden with the boats required by 24 entries from DARC and 99 from 15 Durham College Boat Clubs.
With the date falling after exams and the week before Durham Regatta Hexham is always popular, and the party was greeted this year with sunshine and an at times fresh breeze. Eleven hours of racing got underway at 8am and continued to run to time for most of the day.
Division 1 brought the first two of DARC’s 8 victories of the day which came from John Appleby’s MasH 4x- who overcame Talkin Tarn in the final after their first round opponents from Berwick scratched, and the J16 girls coxless quad who overcame Queen Elizabeth High School in their final.
The WJ18 4x- reached the final but was beaten by Hexham, while Amelie Jones in the Women’s 1x and the J16 boys 2x lost in the semi-finals of their events.
The Women’s coxed four and MasE coxless quad went out in their quarter finals.
Division 2 brought 3 more wins. The DARC/York City WMasF 4x- including Gabrielle Moore and Angela Lund came through 3 races, against Tees, Hexham and Tyne United to win the WMasEFG event in which Tyne United beat the DARC WMasE 4x-. The Women’s 4x- overcame St Leonard’s and Tees RC to claim another success, and there was a win against Lambton RC for Iris Mitchell and Elizabeth Belsey in the final of the WJ14 2x.
Harrison Glasper lost in the final of the J15 1x against Hexham, and the WJ18 2x lost against Chester-le-Street in their final.
Two DARC Women’s doubles went out against Lakeland RC and St Mary’s College in semi and quarter finals, and Michael Terry went out in a closely contested MasD single sculling race against the Berwick MasE sculler.
The J14 coxed quad went out in the quarter final against QEHS.
In division 3 DARC entered two J14 girls 4x+s who went one better than the boys by reaching the semi-final and final respectively before each succumbing to the same Lambton crew.
Three further wins were secured in division 3, by Andy Jaggard and Richard Court who overcame Hexham and Berwick in the MasG 2x, the J17 girls 2x who beat Hexham in the final, and the J17 boys 2x who beat St Leonard’s.
The J15 girls 2x also reached the final only to lose narrowly against Lambton, while the Open 4x- went out against Northumbria University in the semi-final.

Victory in 8 events made DARC the second most successful club of the day after Hexham who achieved 9 wins.

Metropolitan Regatta
On Sunday, June 2nd the Senior Women were at Dorney Lake for the second day of the Metropolitan Regatta, another opportunity for multi-lane racing with Lilly Muskett, Gabby Maxfield, Rachel Wilson and Anna Golightly entering the Women’s Championship 4x- and recording 7.16.90 to take 12th place of 13 entries in the time trial to qualify for the B final in which they finished 4th in 7.47.67.
