The 2023 Long Distance Sculling (LDS) Series got underway on Saturday, September 30th with the first of the six rounds being hosted by Tees Rowing Club, a double header with Tees Small Boats Head (SBH), both contested over the winding 5km course on the River Tees. The morning LDS attracted over 200 entries and the afternoon SBH 130.
Durham ARC had 13 entries in the LDS and 12 in the SBH, competing with rowers from Scotland and Yorkshire as well as from clubs across the Northern Region, entries being well spread between Juniors, Seniors and Masters.
Dry and mild conditions with little wind led to good times and performances as the tight bends were negotiated with some aplomb helping DARC to come away with victory in eight events.
After his silver medal success in the J15 1x at the British Rowing Junior Championships, and victory in the Open 1x at Tyne Single Scullers Head (TSSH) on September 9th Jonny Cleugh demonstrated his prowess over the longer distance with an impressive 20.25.8 in the LDS to win band 1 of the Open 1x ahead of Nick Baird who finished 3rd in 21.06.4, before achieving his second win of the day in the double sculls to take the Open 2x in 19.05.4 in the SBH.
Another LDS win came in the J15 1x from fellow Junior Championship medallist and TSSH winner Quinn Mosley in 20.53.8, while a third single sculling event success went to Nick Baird in the Open 1x in the SBH in 20.55.9.
Further wins came from the Women’s coxless quad in the LDS in 20.14.7, and in the SBH from the J18 2x in 20.55.6, Women’s coxed four in 21.30.0, and Gabrielle Moore and Angela Lund in the Women’s Masters F 2x in 23.20.8.
